How to do Burlesque

Burlesque. A theme that has been mentioned quit a few times on this blog (here and here). For me personally, it's a term that stands for mystery, seduction, femininity and above all, elegance. A term that makes me dream of another age.

When I heard there will be a burlesque party in my neighbourhood, you'll understand that I'd love to go. I was wondering what kind of outfits would come out if you styled it with real fashion items of this season. And then this happened. In the first picture a swirly outfit with a mesh skirt, and the second a more classy outfit with sheer and lace.

A little help for if you're ever going to a burlesque inspired party. Here is a list with (in my eyes) the most stereotype items of a burlesque outfit:
  • long gloves
  • corsets
  • ostrich feathers
  • feather boa
  • fishnet tights
  • killer heels
  • lots of bling bling jewellery
  • bright red or pink lipstick
  • fake lashes
  • curled hair
  • lot's of glitters, lace and rhinestones

And just another tip for if you're looking for some stereotypical inspiration, search for: Dita von Teese, Moulin Rouge, Marilyn Monroe or the movie Burlesque

  1. I apologise for this comment being so long with so many links. I got carried away. I'll understand if you don't approve it. The outfit pieces you show above would be fabulous at that burlesque party.

I love your and Ruby's outfits in your post Two Wonder Girls: Burlesque from 30 Dec 2010 and fabulous masks in your post Two Wonder Girls: Burlesque from 9 FEB 2011

I agree the opera gloves are a must for a burlesque outfit! I would be inclined to add: full rear coverage retro full briefs with classic mushroom shaped gusset like Shadowline classic nylon full briefs Style 17042 0r Dollhouse Bettie Retro 50s High-Waist Satin Panties (in my opinion Dita's briefs are a touch too modern in tailoring) back seamed stockings (I agree fishnets are nice), suspender belt, waist cincher, bustier. Some of the briefs my Dollhouse Bettie such as the Dollhouse Bettie Retro 50s High-Waist Satin Panty. As for the makeup, decidedly stage style makeup if you have it. There are tutorials on it. 40 years ago I owned glitter eyeshadow in Peacock Blue from Stagelight Cosmetics. They used to specialise in Stage makeup, which was more noticeable at distance.

Marilyn Monroe obviously wore classic retro briefs as did Bettie Paige, but that was the era they were from. You've probably notice Bernie Dexter going for the Bettie Paige look. I don't claim to be any expert on burlesque at all, though I do follow many burlesque stars on my Twitter list https://twitter.com/Panty_Buns/lists/burlesque-fame which apparently nobody follows. Oh well. @JoWeldon, whom I follow, is the Headmistress and Founder of the the New York School of Burlesque.

Have a wonderful time if you attend that burlesque party!

    1. Woah thanks for your reply! I just talked about the stereotypical aspect, but I understand this subject is definitely up your alley. :) Thank you for completing the list with some more trustworthy information! I didn't even knew that a school for burlesque existed.

    2. Actually, I should and do apologise, both for nor proof reading my comment, for inserting my own personal taste, and for mentioning lingerie brands and styles - there are way too many fabulous lingerie brands and gorgeous collections out there and mentioning a couple leaves so many out. Some luxury lingerie I have looked at that is way too expensive to not let it show if purchased. I also left out separate garters (oops). Again, I am no expert on burlesque - it's an art form - I'm merely someone who loves lingerie - but thanks for the compliment anyway. You both look stunning in burlesque outfits.
