Degas' little dancer

The impressionist Degas has made some beautiful paintings. I think everybody agrees with that. But he also made sculptures like this Little dancer of fourteen year old. (People where shocked because modelling was linked with prostitution back then.) Ruby and I discussed over it. -It seems like that we always discuss at art history :p- Well simply said, I think she's ugly and Ruby said she's not. Now you can hear us coming...
What do you think about this work?

So dear people let us hear your voices!

  3. I've always been a big fan of Degas and I saw this sculpture several years ago in Washington DC (I think) and loved it. I find it striking.

  5. Degas ist great! I have a favour for impressionists :-)
I think this sculpture isn't ugly, but still not beautiful at all. i can't understand whether the young dancer is sad or just deepened to the music. Her body and her dress don't have nice color, and yes: that colors are ugly. But I like legs. They're up to real dancer's legs which make that sculture so intresting for me.

Your comment for "The Kiss" wasnt't silly ;-) I'm also a little doubtfully about that love (however the picture broaches the issue of love)

  6. Ahh, I saw this when I went to the Musee D'Orsay! I love all of Degas' work, and I don't think he's that interested with the aesthetic qualities of the models, but the attitude they have to their art - i.e. dancing. Love it (:

  8. the dress is my favorite part of this sculpture-so much love went into making that very detailed skirt.

  9. I don't think that he made the dress himself. I agree the dress is beautiful, but I don't like the fact that it looks so old and I don't like the contrast between the silk and the bronze :)

  10. Hi

Can I ask where you got the last 2 images of "14 year old Dancer" from?

It's just that this person here seems to have stolen the images, claiming she took them as her own:
